[Portable writing desk], ca. 1850.

A wood writing case, or desk, with brass bindings, decorative corners, handles and fittings. A brass plate on top is engraved: Browning. The case opens to form a slanted writing surface that is felt covered. There are compartments to hold two ink wells, pens and writing equipment. It has a side drawer for storage and a compartment under the top portion of the writing surface. The desk contains 2 writing pens, a ring with six keys (and an ivory marker on one key noting that it is to a bookcase) and an ivory "ticket" (3.5 x 3.5 cm.) engraved with: Monday popular concerts, St. James Hall; and in hand inscription: 22 Season.

Dr. Derrick T. Vail purchased Robert Browning's desk from E.P. Dutton & COmpany on February 20, 1915 for his wife, Dellah Harris Vail. Mrs. Vail bequeathed the desk to Smith College in memory of her daughter, Charlotte Farrell Vail, Class of 1923, who died at Smith College on March 11, 1923. Robert Browning was a British poet. Born on May 7, 1812, Browning wrote his first major work,"Pauline: a fragment of a confession" at the age of twenty.
